Many companies choose to ship by rail because of the higher weight capacity this mode of transportation allows, and with rising fuel prices, shipping by rail can provide significantly reduced shipping costs as well. But there are significant damage challenges for which you need to be prepared.
Humping rail cars can often cause end-to-end shifting in transit and the costs of damage can be high. More than the damaged product, there's the cost to ship the damaged product back and restock it, the time delay, the potential injury to your workers caused from unloading a railcar full of damaged or shifted product, and perhaps most important of all, the potential loss of a customer after they receive a damaged load.
Plus, the Association of American Railroads has stringent regulations regarding load securement products, both to ensure safe product transit, and because product shifting in a boxcar could derail the train.
DPC has you covered. We load hundreds of railcars a year and have become experts in the proper loading of railcars. All of our dunnage products are thoroughly tested and approved by the Association of American Railroads, designed to secure your products in transit and help you prevent the high costs of damage.
These products include:
- Void Fillers: corrugated load securement products that fill the void between the pallets in your railcar for securing products in transit
- Honeycomb Panels: superior strength panels used for filling voids and adding protection for products in rail transit
- Air Bags: easy-to-inflate level IV air bags secure products in place for excellent protection during rail transit
- Corrugated Pads: used as load separators and product liners to prevent products from rubbing together during rail transit
- Honeycomb Pallets: innovative honeycomb pallets provide a strong, lightweight and cost-effective alternative to wooden and plastic pallets
- and other customized products to fit your specific loads
Here is one example of a load securement solution created for preventing damage in transit when shipping by railcar.
Dunnage air bags are used with Protecto-Cell Panels to secure the product and alleviate front-to-back shifting in transit. Protecto-Cell Panels are also used as a separator sheet in between double-stacked pallets of product to prevent chaffing of the wood pallet on the product.
